The Shining Fan Flower is a hardy and drought-tolerant shrub with small to medium-sized bushy structure with, lightly toothed leaves and produces a profusion of sapphire blue flowers from spring to early summer.
This plant is ideal for coastal regions as its thick fleshy leaves can withstand constant sand and salt spray. In protected positions, the plant can grow up to 3 meters tall while in more exposed areas, it becomes a spreading plant with lower growth. It is a very useful plant for the regeneration of coastal dunes and an attractive addition to garden beds, pots, and tubs.
Scaevola occurs naturally in the coastal regions of South Western Australia. It adapts well to most well-drained soils in an open sunny position and tolerates full coastal exposure.
The best time to sow Scaevola is spring or early autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
- Crack or cut open the outer shell to expose the embryo to allow water to ingress. Sow seed on a porous seed-raising mix and cover lightly.
- Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
- The growing medium should be well draining but should remain moist between watering.
- Germination should occur in 21-60 days depending on the temperature and conditions, germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°.
Pre-treatment of smoke is recommended for this species.
Many members of this genus are responsive to the pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination may occur without smoke treatment it has proved to be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in this species.
