Strelitzia reginae is a striking plant that forms large, evergreen clumps of rigid leaves emerging from the base. The leaves, resembling grey-green bananas, reach a height of about 1.2 meters, and flowers are perched atop long stalks above the foliage.
Flowering occurs in autumn, winter, and spring, with mature plants producing numerous blooms. This species thrives in full sun to semi-shade and is relatively easy to cultivate in the garden.
It naturally occurs in the Cape Provinces and KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa, its place of origin.
The plant favours light to medium, well-drained soil in a protected, partially shaded spot position.
Seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 25°C for this species.
Strelitzia is easy to grow from seed if follow these notes.
Seeds develop a hard coat that prevents germination.
Note: Some research has shown it may also be beneficial to place the seed in a plastic bag and place it in the refrigerator for two weeks prior to the process note.
