WASHINGTONIA robusta commonly known as The Mexican Fan Palm is a fast-growing tall ornamental palm with a tall straight trunk topped with a relatively small rounded crown of rich green fan-like leaves 90-150cm.
Probably one of the most commonly planted palm trees around the world that occurs naturally in the desert mountain valleys and canyons of Sonora and Baja Mexico. A popular landscape plant that is often used in exotic gardens, or as a potted plant or pool plant when young.
Adaptable to a range of soils including poor soils.
It has a high tolerance for salt and is a good choice for planting near coastlines. It also is very wind resistant.
Grow notes:
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 28-30°C
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
