An attractive relatively short-growing member of the Xanthorrhoea genus with long grass-like leaves 2-6 mm in diameter.
The individual flowers are white/cream and very small, clustered together in a spear-like spike, 1-1.5 m high.
A food source for nectar-eating birds and butterflies when in flowers and seed-eating birds when the seed is developing.
Grass trees are widely recognised throughout the world as being uniquely Australian.
Endemic to a small region of South Australia, including Kangaroo Island.
Prefers light well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Drought and frost-resistant.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year.
Xanthorrhoea germinate readily from seed with no special pre-treatment.
Germination generally occurs in around 10-60 days at 18-22°C
