A native to South America, widely growing for its creamy white large turnip shaped roots with crisp sweet taste, 10-15 cm in diameter, 200-400 grams in weight.
The white flesh of the root can be eaten cooked or raw. Rich in vitamin C, dietary fibre and minerals. Removing the flowers can double the yield of roots.
Tropical: All seasons.
Temperate: Spring & Summer.
Cold: Spring to Mid-Summer.
Sow: 6mm deep.
Germination: 10-20 days.
Growing needs are similar to potatoes. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well-rotted animal manure or compost. Earthing up will help increase production.
