The Duck Headed Wattle is a shrub or tree that typically grows to a height of 1 to 4 meters, but can be as high as 7 meters. It blooms from April to June and produces yellow flowers.

The plant has corky, deeply furrowed bark and green to grey-green to blue-green leathery textured phyllodes which have unequal ends resembling a duck's head shape. The phyllodes are usually 4 to 9 cm in length and 2 to 6 cm wide.

This species of Acacia occurs naturally in the arid areas of northwestern Australia, including Dampierland, Gibson Desert, and the Great Sandy Desert. The range of the plant extends from the northern boundary of the Pilbara region northwards to around Broome in the northwest to around Kumpupintil Lake and Lake Gregory in the east.
It occurs on red soil and is sometimes found on heavier, sometimes saline, soils.

For best results, sow the seeds in spring or early summer. Sowings in autumn and winter may result in slow germination, weaker seedlings, or germination failure.

  1.  soak in water for 24-48 hours.
  2. Next, soak seeds in near boiling water overnight to help soften the tough exterior and improve germination.
  3. Sow the seeds to a depth equal to the seed's width.

Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
