An erect or spreading shrub 1-4 metres but more typically around 2 metres tall with attractive bright yellow flowers that occur during August to September. Narrow phyllodes (leaves) 8 cm long.

Distribution of this species is mainly in the upper catchment of the Snowy River (hence the common name) south from the Cooma district in New South Wales to the highlands of Victoria. It also occurs outside its natural range in the ACT where it has been widely cultivated and has become naturalized.

Full sun to part shade but will flower more profusely in full sun. Suited to most soils that are well drained. Frost hardy; will tolerate frosts to -7 C.

The best time to sow Acacia seed is:
Cool climates: September to May.
Temperate climates: September to May.
Sub-Tropical climates: August to May
Tropical climates: September to November or March to May.
Arid climates: August to May.

  1.  soak in water for 24-48 hours.
  2. Next, soak seeds in near boiling water overnight to help soften the tough exterior and improve germination.
  3. Sow the seeds to a depth equal to the seed's width.

Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
