There are over 1200 species of acacia occurring in Australia, making it the largest genus of flowering plants in Australia.

Acacia brachybotrya is a dense, round, erect or spreading shrub that typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 metres high and often wider.

Flowering occurs from July to November, with each head having 28 to 36 golden-yellow flowers.

As with all Acacia, they do not have true leaves; they have modified leaves known as phyllodes
The greyish-green phyllodes are variable in shape, often lance-shaped to egg-shaped with the narrower end towards the base,10 to 35 millimetres wide and 5 to 12 millimetres wide.

Easily grown in most temperate and semi arid areas and suited to a range occurs on a variety of soils, often in mallee communities.
Flowers best in full sun, frost hardy and drought tolerant.
Occurs naturally in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.
Acacia brachybotrya was first formally described in 1842.

Acacia is easy to propagate from seed.

The best time to sow Acacia seed is Late winter and spring. Seed sown in autumn will need to be kept warm until spring.
Avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.

  1. Soak in water 24 hours
  2. Next, soak seeds in near boiling water  for 24-48 hours,to help soften the tough exterior and improve germination.
  3. Sow the seeds to a depth equal to the seed's width.
  4. Place in a semi-shaded postion.
  5. Keep the soil moist, avoid overwatering and ensure it doesn’t dry out.

Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.

* Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lie dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist, but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
