Acacia difficilis, also known as the river wattle, is a rapidly growing shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 3.5 to 10 meters. It features elongated flowers that bloom from the middle of autumn to the beginning of spring in its indigenous environment.

The river wattle is distinguished by its fibrous, gray to brown bark on the trunk and branches, and its narrowly elliptic phyllodes that mimic leaves. These phyllodes taper at the base and are 6 to 14 cm long and 15 to 40 mm wide.
Similar to other Acacias, it possesses phyllodes instead of true leaves, which are modified leaf stalks adapted to perform the functions of leaves.

This versatile species is capable of flourishing in diverse soil types and environmental conditions, including both arid and tropical climates.

Its natural habitat spans the northern areas of the Northern Territory, extending southward from the Tiwi Islands, westward to the Kununurra region of Western Australia, and eastward along the Gulf of Carpentaria to the far northwest of Queensland.

Pre-treatment: Hot Water
Place the seed in a container, pour in just boiled water, and allow to soak overnight.
The swollen seed can then be sown, and seeds that have not swollen can be re-treated.
Sow seed 3-5mm and keep moist. Germination should occur in 10-21 days @ 18-22C.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
