A large shrub or small tree with finely ridged blackish bark and green ferny leaves, dark green on top and paler and downy underneath. Pale yellow flowers are borne in spring to early summer.

In the past, large amounts of Black Wattle trees were harvested for tannin, which was used in the tanning industry. Black Wattle is a crucial habitat tree for many types of wildlife.

Occurring in the drier coastal woodlands of eastern and southern Australia.
A good regeneration species of Acacia.

Ideal Acacia for subtropical and warm temperate regions. Moderately frost and drought-tolerant.

Acacia is easy to propagate from seed.

The best time to sow Acacia seed is autumn, Late winter and spring.

  1. Sow in a well drained mix.
  2. Soak in water 24 hours
  3. Next, soak seeds in near boiling water  for 24-48 hours,to help soften the tough exterior and improve germination.
  4. Sow the seeds to a depth equal to the seed's width.
  5. Place in a semi-shaded postion.
  6. Keep the soil moist, avoid overwatering and ensure it doesn’t dry out.

Germination: Typically occurs within two weeks.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lie dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist, but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
