A quick growing openly branched spreading tree or shrub typically grows to a height of 5 to 7 metres with a well-developed canopy. It has hard grey glossy bark that is occasionally fissured with pruinose orange to yellow branchlets with falcate to subfalcate glaucous green phyllodes (leaves) that are 6 to 25 centimetres long and 0.7 to 6 cm wide.

Produces yellow flowers usually racemose or axillary or terminal panicles 20 cm long between April and October which are followed by narrow oblong woody glabrous seed pods that are 3 to 12 cm in length containing the glossy black seeds.
A hardy species that are suitable for arid and semi-arid conditions.

Adaptable to a range of soils including sandy soils, loam or clay loam. Drought and frost are tolerant.

Occurs naturally in the Kimberley, Pilbara and northeastern Goldfields regions and the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia extending into the Victoria River district of the Northern Territory.

Pre-treatment: Hot Water
Place the seed in a container, pour in just boiled water, and allow to soak overnight.
The swollen seed can then be sown, and seeds that have not swollen can be re-treated.
Sow seed 3-5mm and keep moist. Germination should occur in 10-21 days @ 18-22C.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
