Easily recognised by the swollen base of its trunk, which gives the tree a bottle-like appearance. The bulbous trunk has been recorded to have a diameter of over ten metres.
During mid-spring to early summer, the tree bears large, drooping, sweet-scented white flowers up to 12 cm across. The flowers open in the late afternoon and stay open for one night.
The Baobab is deciduous, losing its leaves during the dry winter; leaves are divided into five glossy leaflets.
Adansonia digitata is the most widespread Adansonia species, native to South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Mozambique.
It will grow in various areas, provided they are not exposed to frost. It prefers well-drained sandy soil with plenty of water during the growing season but prefers drier conditions when dormant during the winter months when it will lose its leaves. It grows slower in cooler regions.

Pre-treatment: Hot Water
Place the seed in a container, pour in just boiled water, and allow to soak overnight.
The swollen seed can then be sown, and seeds that have not swollen can be re-treated.
Sow the seeds 10mm deep and keep them moist but not too wet, or they will rot. Germination should occur in 10-21 days @ 18-30°C.
