Aloe candelabrum was previously part of the Aloe ferox species but now is a separate species with a restricted range. Flowers are shorter than Aloe ferox and mostly a dull red seen in mid-winter.
Aloe candelabrum is a plant with a single trunk and can reach a height of up to 3 meters. At the top of the trunk is a rosette of thick, succulent, grey-blue leaves with spiny margins. During winter, a spectacular flowering stem is produced, which tends to be branched and can have up to twelve orange to red flowering spikes.
A flowering succulent native to that occurs in the east-central KwaZulu-Natal from Pietermaritzburg southwards to the Umtamvuna River in South Africa.
The secret to growing aloe is to create a free-draining mix that will not become waterlogged. Aloe seeds can be easily propagated in sandy and well-drained potting soil during spring or summer.
Once you've sown the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of sand (1-2mm) and keep the soil moist but not too wet.
It's best to keep the seeds in a warm and shady area.
When the seedlings are sufficiently grown to handle, they can be planted out.
It usually takes about three weeks for the seeds to germinate when the soil temperature is around 23°C.
