Aloe ecklonis is a sturdy and enduring succulent plant with broad leaves that have white-toothed margins. The rosettes of leaves are very appealing on their own. During the summer months from November to January, it produces flowers on short flowering stems. The flowers come in various colors ranging from yellow and orange to salmon-pink and very rarely red.

It is an attractive addition to any garden as a large number of flowers are borne simultaneously. You can plant it amongst grasses in a grassland garden or use it as an eye-catching form plant in garden beds or containers.

For best results, plant the Aloe ecklonis in full sun or light semi-shade and if the soil is not moist, water it well and regularly. The grass aloe can grow up to 40cm tall.

Occurs naturally from the Eastern Cape northwards through KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Free State, Mpumalanga Highveld, Swaziland, and Lesotho.

The secret to growing aloe is to create a free-draining mix that will not become waterlogged. Aloe seeds can be easily propagated in sandy and well-drained potting soil during spring or summer.

Once you've sown the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of sand (1-2mm) and keep the soil moist but not too wet.

It's best to keep the seeds in a warm and shady area.

When the seedlings are sufficiently grown to handle, they can be planted out.
It usually takes about three weeks for the seeds to germinate when the soil temperature is around 23°C.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
