Aloe ferox has a tall single stem that can grow to 2-3 metres (10 ft) in height.
The thick, fleshy leaves are green-blue and arranged in rosettes around the stem.
Showy, tall flower spikes form high above the foliage, carrying many brightly coloured orange-red flowers.
Flowering occurs in winter and spring but may be delayed in areas with colder conditions.
A flowering succulent native to Arabia, Madagascar and Africa, but is most diverse in South Africa.
The secret to growing aloe is to create a free-draining mix that will not become waterlogged. Aloe seeds can be easily propagated in sandy and well-drained potting soil during spring or summer.
Once you've sown the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of sand (1-2mm) and keep the soil moist but not too wet.
It's best to keep the seeds in a warm and shady area.
When the seedlings are sufficiently grown to handle, they can be planted out.
It usually takes about three weeks for the seeds to germinate when the soil temperature is around 23°C.
