Andropogon gerardii grass, also known as Turkeyfoot and Big Bluestem, is a warm-season bunchgrass growing to 2.1 meters tall.
The seedheads are divided into narrow branches that resemble a turkey's foot.
It's an excellent plant for controlling erosion and providing cover and wildlife nest sites. During autumn, it turns a stunning reddish-brown colour.
This architectural grass is perfect for erosion control on the back of borders, banks, and slopes and is an excellent choice for drought-prone gardens.
Andropogon gerardii is Illinois and Missouri's state grass and Manitoba's official prairie grass.
This long-lived perennial is a significant part of the tallgrass prairie in central North America.
Andropogon seeds are best sown in autumn or early winter when the soil moisture is adequate or in spring.
Germination: 10-21 days at a soil temperature of 15-21°C
