A showy North American Aster with stunning long-lasting deep violet flowers with yellow centres.
A tall growing aster that can reach 1.2 metres or more and is adaptable to a wide of soil types. An extremely popular aster that looks magnificent in garden beds and makes wonderful cut flowers.
Previously known as Aster novae-angliae it is native to almost every area in North America east of the Rocky Mountains excluding the far north of Canada as well as some of the southern United States. It was used medicinally by native Americans.
Introduced to Europe in 1710 it has become naturalised along roadsides and on disturbed ground.
Grow notes:
Tropical: Late Winter to Early Summer.
Temperate: Spring to Early Summer.
Cold: Spring to Early Summer.
Sow: 6mm deep.
For best results sow directly into the soil where they are to grow. If growing in trays transplant when large enough to handle to avoid excessive root disturbance.
Germination: 10-14 days.
Plant Space: 15cm
Flowering: 14 weeks
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.
Adaptable to most soils but prefers light to medium soil in an open sunny position, it is drought and frost-tender.
