Suitable for containers, beds and borders, and the pollinator garden where they also attract beneficial insects.

Calendulas have been used for many centuries for culinary and medicinal purposes.
Flower petals are edible and have a slightly bitter and peppery flavour.

Adaptable to most soils and conditions providing it is in a sunny position but prefers rich, moderately moist and well-drained soils.

Grow notes:

Tropical: Late Summer to Autumn or in Spring.

For best results sow directly into the soil where they are to grow. If growing on trays transplant when large enough to handle avoid excessive root disturbance.

Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.

Calendula seeds can be planted directly into the garden or in trays/containers and then transplanted when they are large enough to handle.

For garden planting, sow the seeds 15mm deep and 50-60cm apart in rows 60cm apart. It is essential to keep the soil moist throughout the growth period. The seeds will typically germinate within 7-14 days. The optimum soil temperature is 18-22°C.

Tropical: Late Summer to Autumn or in Spring.
Temperate: Mid-summer to Late Autumn.
Cold: Spring or Autumn

Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.

As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.

These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
