Double and Semi-Double forms of this popular American wildflower bloom in a range of colours including shades of apricot, orange, pink, red, white and yellow from spring through to autumn on a compact growing plant that requires virtually no care.

California Poppies are a charming addition to any garden and are easy to grow.Performs best when sown directly in the garden or project site.

Generally grown as an annual, California poppies often become naturalised in cottage gardens by self-seeding.

Ideal for borders, bedding, and containers or wildflower meadow planting.
Attracts honeybees and other beneficial insects.

The California Poppy is the state flower of California.
Native to the United States and Mexico.

Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in an open sunny position. Tolerant to poor sandy soils and drought and frost-resistant.
Grows well in warmer climates, drought tolerant.

The best time to sow Californian poppy seeds is from February to April or from September to November.
Sow 2-3mm deep, cover lightly and gently firm.

  1. For best results sow directly into the soil where they are to grow as California Poppies do not like root disturbance.
  2. If mass planting as a meadow scatter seeds and rake over.

Germination: 14-21 days at a soil temperature of 16-22°C.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
