The flowers on this variety of Centaurea are a deep blue on plants 70 to 90 centimetres tall.
They are suitable for cutting, beds and borders, flower mixtures, pollinator gardens or mass planting in meadows and cottage gardens.

The flowers attract honeybees and other beneficial insects.
Deadheading will prolong blooming.

Flower petals are edible and can be sprinkled on salads, cottage cheese, and desserts.

Plants typically self-seed in the garden, dropping their seeds on the soil at the end of the season and growing the following season.

They are also known as Cornflower or Bachelor’s Button they are adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in a sunny position. Hardy and undemanding plant that tolerates poor soils.

Centaurea cyanus originates from the wildflower meadows of Europe.

Seeds can be planted directly into the garden, trays, or containers and then transplanted when they are large enough to handle.
If massing planting, scatter seeds and rake over just enough to cover the seed.

For garden planting, sow the seeds 5mm deep and 20-30 cm apart. It is essential to keep the soil moist throughout the growth period. The seeds will typically germinate within 7-14 days. The optimum germination soil temperature is 15-20°C.

Tropical: Late Summer to Autumn or in Spring.
Temperate: Mid-summer to Late Autumn.
Cold: Spring or Autumn

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
