A popular spring bedding plant that originated in Europe. They have fragrant large golden yellow flowers and are uniform in height and habit. Wallflowers thrive in a sunny spot in the garden and can be planted in a variety of positions or containers.
Wallflowers. are great for cottage gardens as they are suitable for edging and look wonderful when planted in large drifts. They also attract beneficial insects.
The English Wallflower is native to southern Europe and may have been brought to England by Normans during the 11th century. It is a perennial plant but can be grown as an annual.
Wallflowers commonly self-seed in the garden.
Wallflowers prefer well-drained soil in an open, sunny position, and are drought and frost-resistant.
Wallflower seeds are best grown in trays and transplanted when large enough to handle.
For masses planting scatter over weed-free soil and rake over 6mm deep. Keep moist during germination.
Tropical: Autumn
Temperate: Mid-Summer and Autumn.
Cool climate: Mid-summer and Autumn.
Germination: 7-14 days at soil tempers of 18-22°C.
