The Painted Serpent Cucumber is an heirloom variety that produces light green striped fruits. These fruits curl into snake-like shapes and have a crisp, mild flavour.
Although commonly known as a cucumber, it is a melon originating in Armenia.
Painted Serpents grow to 100-120 centimetres but are best picked at 20-30 centres long.
The fruits are produced on a long vine with attractive dark and pale green ridges.
This cucumber has thin skin and an excellent flavour but is best eaten young.
Cucumbers are a warm-season crop; they will thrive when grown under full sun. The best way to sow them is in well-drained soil with compost and mature animal manure mixed trough.
Sow 2-3 seeds in a mound and thin to the strongest two directly in the garden 10mm deep and 50cm apart, with rows 100cm apart. Keep soil moist and avoid drying out.
Germination occurs in around 5-10 days at an optimum soil temperature of 18-34°C
Cool climates: October to December.
