A hardy traditional Cottage garden plant renowned for its intensely fragrant flowers that occur in clusters of bright scarlet single flowers on long stems 40-60 cm high.
An ideal choice for poor soils and hot, sunny positions.
A popular border or container plant that also makes great cut flowers. Trim back lightly after the first flowering. Plants can be divided into early spring or autumn.
Dianthus blooms in the summer for 8 to 10 weeks and will sometimes bloom again in the autumn.
Adaptable to most well-drained soils in a sunny position. Fertile soils will produce the best blooms, avoid waterlogged soils.
Tropical: Early Autumn to Late Spring.
Temperate: Late Summer to Late Spring.
Cold: Autumn & Spring.
Sow: 3mm deep.
Grow in trays transplant when large enough to handle (about 4-5 weeks) to avoid excessive root disturbance.
Germination: 10-14 days.
