Sheep Fescue is a cool-season bunchgrass growing 30-45 tall and forming densely tufted mounds of narrow leaf blades.
Despite its common name, sheep grass has nothing to do with sheep. It makes a good lawn alternative because it is the most heat and drought-tolerant and can withstand the harshest conditions and temperature extremes.
It is also ideal for landscaping, beds, borders, rock gardens, and ground cover.
It is adaptable and non-aggressive, which makes it ideal for combining with flower mixtures to create a meadow or natural-looking area. Grow in a sunny location since the foliage colour is best when grown in full sun
It is well suited to poor shallow soils and will grow in dry or moist soil in full sun or part shade. It prefers well-drained light sandy or medium loamy soil and is drought tolerant.
Native throughout Europe (with the exception of some Mediterranean areas) and eastwards across much of Asia, it has also been introduced to North America
Festuca seeds are best sown in early winter (March to June) when the soil moisture is adequate. However, spring sowing (September) can also be successful in areas with heavy rainfall.
Germination: 10-21 days at a soil temperature of 15-21°C
