Festuca ovina is a cool-season bunching grass with fine green leaf blades growing up to 40 cm tall.

It is an adaptable grass that can be combined with flower mixtures to create a meadow or natural-looking area. Once established, its extensive and dense root system makes it excellent for weed and erosion control or a hardy lawn alternative.

Festuca are popular for modern garden design and look great in mass plantings. The grass is adaptable and non-aggressive, making it ideal for combining flower mixtures to create a meadow or natural-looking area. Furthermore, it makes a great ornamental grass for beds and borders. It thrives in sunny locations, as the foliage is best coloured in full sun.

Festuca are an ornamental grass from Europe.

Festuca seeds are best sown in early winter (March to June) when the soil moisture is adequate. In areas of high rainfall, spring sowing (September) can also be successful.

  1. Best sown 3-6 mm directly where they are to grow.
  2. If sowing in trays transplant when large enough to handle.
  3. If mass planting as a meadow scatter seeds and rake over.

Germination: 10-21 days at a soil temperature of 15-21°C

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
