An old-fashioned heirloom perennial twining vine, Morning Glory ‘Grandpa Ott’ produces an abundance of large, funnel-shaped flowers and heart-shaped leaves.
The deep purple with a red star and white-throated flowers opens in the morning and lasts only one day.
Perfect for growing on trellises, arbours, lattice, or chain-link fences or used as a ground cover.
Adaptable to most well-drained soils from poor to rich, but prefers a well-drained moist soil for the best performance.
Grow notes:
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia, it is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates. Avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature is around 18-22°C.
Ipomoea seeds germinate readily, but they have a hard outer coating that is impermeable to water. Germination usually does not occur unless the seed is scarified by abrading or pre-treated with boiling water first.
General note: The seeds of many plants are dormant and need specific conditions or pre-treatment to germinate. Don't be too quick to discard seeds that don't germinate, as they may remain dormant until the conditions are right for germination to happen. Seeds in containers set aside may still sprout long after they were initially discarded.
