Linum rubrum, "Scarlet Flax is a hardy annual that provides a bright splash of colour with spectacular rounded flowers about 4 cm across in bright crimson with a deeper centre leading to a solid black eye, with a matching deeper rim to each petal.
Native to Algeria, but it is known elsewhere in Northern Africa, Southern Europe and in several locations in North America as an introduced species.
Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in a sunny position but prefers average soil that is not too rich.
Grow notes:
Best sown late winter early spring. Seeds require light to germinate and do not sow deeply.
Sow: Sow on the surface and cover lightly. Keep warm and moist but not too wet.
Germination: 21-28 days @ 18-22°C
Plant space: 40cm
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for more vigorous plants.
