Linum "Blue Flax" is a hardy perennial with spirally arranged narrow lanceolate leaves 1–2.5 cm and pale blue flowers 2.5cm in diameter that occur profusely over the flowering season.
The delicate petals fade and fall off during the day's heat, only to be replaced by fresh flowers the next morning. Plants bloom in spring and summer.
It is suitable for mass planting or borders where it produces a spectacular display. Ideal for meadows and reclamation projects.
Native to Europe, primarily in the Alps and locally in England. It has been introduced into North America, where it can be found on mountain ridges, wooded areas, and sandy plain habitats.
It is drought tolerant and grows best in full sun with dry to moderate moisture, adaptable to garden most well-drained garden soils in a sunny position but prefers average soil that is not too rich.
Grow notes:
Best sown late winter early spring. Seeds require light to germinate and do not sow deeply.
Sow: Sow on the surface and cover lightly. Keep warm and moist but not too wet.
Germination: 21-28 days @ 18-22°C
Plant space: 40cm
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for more vigorous plants.
