Pods are similar to English peas, green and pointed with a bit of reddish mottling. Several pods are produced in clusters on an upright stem.
The pigeon pea is a very popular vegetable throughout the Caribbean and Central America, and can be used as any other pea might be used.
For optimal growth, it is recommended to sow pea seeds directly into the garden.
To aid germination, it's advised to soak the seeds overnight to aid in the uptake of moisture.
When sowing, plant the seeds 2cm deep and 10cm apart, with rows spaced 75cm apart. It's important to maintain the soil's moisture, but avoid making it too wet or dry. Germination: 7-14 days at a soil temperature ranging from 5-25°C.
Tropical: Autumn and Winter.
Temperate: Late Summer to late Winter.
Cold: Early Winter to early Spring.
