Virginia Stock is a petite plant growing to about 15-30 centimetres with pastel shades of lilac, white or yellow flowers that have a delicate fragrance.
Probably one of the easiest of all plants to grow. Hardy plants are guaranteed to produce a profusion of flowers over a long period from late winter to summer.
Malcolmia maritima, perhaps better known by its common name, “Virginia stock” is a popular annual garden plant from the Brassicaceae family.
Use plants for coastal sandy soil, beds, borers, containers or mass planting.
Native to the Mediterranean region and will tolerate full sun or partial shade.
Grow notes:
Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in a sunny position. Tolerates dry, poor soils.
Tropical: Autumn.
Temperate: Late summer to Autumn.
Cold: Late summer, Autumn & Spring.
Sow: Sow on the surface and firm down gently. Keep moist but not too wet.
Best sown direct. Avoid excessive root disturbance if sowing in trays transplant when 5 cm high.
Germination: 7-10 days.
Plant space: 15cm
Flowering: 14 weeks
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for more vigorous plants.
