A perennial monocot with a trunk 1.5-5 metres tall with flower spikes to 2 metres.
One of the most popular grass trees that is known for its symmetrical form and bluish-glaucous green foliage.

Muplipe flowers occur in late mid-summer on the flower spiked and are a good source for nectar-eating birds and insects. The seed that develops after pollination and the flowers die is a good food source of food for members of the parrot family.

Grass trees are widely recognised throughout the world as being uniquely Australian.
Occurs naturally in New South Wales extending into southern Queensland.

Prefers light well-drained soil in an open sunny position.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C for this species.

Xanthorrhoea germinate readily from seed with no special pre-treatment.

  1. Sow 3-4 mm deep in a porous seed-raising mix.
  2. Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  3. Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position, and keep moist.
  4. Germination generally occurs in around 10-28 days in the right condition.
