A beautiful addition to any herb garden with its deep bluish purple foliage and pink flowers; it is also high in volatile oils, responsible for the heady aroma and strong flavour so essential to cooking. Pick the leaves and use fresh or dried in tomato dishes, pasta sauces, vegetables, and soups. You can also use basil in the garden as a companion plant to repel aphids, mites, and tomato hornworms.
The best time to sow the seed is in Spring after the last frost.
- Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before planting. This will help soften the seed coat and speed up the germination process.
- Plant the seeds in well-draining soil as they prefer moist soil but don’t like to be waterlogged.
- Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and keep them moist but not wet.
- Position the pots in a warm and bright location, but not in direct sunlight.
- Once the seedlings emerge, you can transplant them into individual pots or your garden
Germination: 10 to 21 days.
