A hardy traditional cottage garden plant, this dianthus hybrid is a unique heirloom variety rescued from extinction. Plants are covered with clusters of deeply fringed flowers that emit a strong perfumed fragrance similar to carnation, jasmine, and rose scents. The large flowers come in a mixture of lilac, rose, carmine, white and purple.
Perfect for old-fashioned cut flowers, pots, and containers. An ideal choice for poor soils and hot, sunny positions.

Trim back lightly after the first flowering. Plants can be divided into early spring or autumn.
Dianthus blooms in the summer for 8 to 10 weeks and will sometimes bloom again in the autumn.

Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.

Dianthus and Carnation seeds are small and need to be planted on a fine-sifted bed of compost or potting soil.
The growing medium should not be wet and soggy.

Mist spray the surface of the growing medium. Spread the seeds as evenly as possible on the surface, and mist spray again.

Cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculate or sifted potting soil/compost. Ensure the seeds are placed in a well-lit position, as this is vital for their growth and development. Regular mist spraying is also recommended.

Once the seeds germinate, keep the seedlings moist but not wet.

When to sow.

  • Cool: February to May or August to October.
  • Temperate: March to May or August to October.
  • Sub-tropical: April to October.
  • Tropical: April to October.
  • Arid: April to October

Transplant seedlings when they are large enough to handle. (2.5 to 5 cm)

Seeds should germinate in around 14 – 21 days.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • Customers should do their due diligence to ensure the product suits their region.
