This beautiful, old-fashioned plant is a magnet for nectar-feeding birds and other beneficial insects and can easily self-seed. The plant has short foliage that is topped with 60 to 90-cm flower spikes during spring and summer. Ideal for cottage gardens, containers, beds and borders and makes excellent cut flowers.
These spikes come in various colours such as purple, pink, white, and cream. If the spent flower stalks are cut back after blooming, the plants may re-bloom.
Adaptable to most well-drained fertile garden soils in full sun or part shade.
It's worth noting that the dried leaves of this plant are used to produce digitalis, which is a powerful heart treatment.
Because of this we strongly recommend that it should only be used as garden flowers.
The seeds are small, it is best to sow them on the surface, cover lightly and keep them moist.
If growing in trays transplant when large enough to handle.
If sowing for mass plantings scatter on roughened soil and rake cover lightly.
