Valerian is a perennial plant that grows up to 150cm with pinnate foliage and fragrant pale pink flowers that bloom during the summer, making it a useful ornamental plant for cottage gardens, garden borders, and herb gardens.
It is also a medicinal herb that has been used since the second century as a natural sedative for nervous tension, excitability, stress, and intestinal colic or cramps. Valerian is commonly grown as a companion plant in vegetable gardens.
Valerian has a flower that has a strong smell, but the root is the part that is mostly used. The best time to harvest the root is when the plant is dormant, which is either at the start of winter or just before it begins to grow again in spring.
Adaptable to most well-drained fertile garden soils in a sunny position.
